Question

Calculate the Equivalent mass of Sulphuric Acid?

Open in App
Solution

Definition:

  1. Equivalent mass which is also known as gram equivalent mass, is the mass which will combine or displaces a fixed quantity of another substance.

2. Equivalent mass = Molar mass/N-factor of acid

3. N-factor of acid is the number of H+ions released by an acid.

4. In sulphuric acid N-factor is 2.

Calculation.

  1. Mass of 2 hydrogen atoms: 1
  2. Mass of sulphur: 32
  3. Mass of oxygen atom: 16

Molar mass of sulphuric acid (H2SO4) = Mass of 2 hydrogen atoms + Mass of sulphur + Mass of 4 oxygen atom.

= 2(1) + 32 + 4(16)

= 98u

Equivalent mass = Molar mass/N-factor of acid

= 98/2

= 49u
