Question

Calculate the smaller force if the bigger force is 40N and the resultant force is perpendicular to the smaller force. The two forces are acting at an angle of 120

Solution

Step 1:Given data & Formula used:

Let the angle θ=1200

The smaller force is 20N.

R.F=F12+F22+2F1F2cosθ2

Let A be the bigger force and B be the smaller force.

Where

R.F=Resulting force

F1,F2=Two known forces

θ=angle between two forces

Step 2:Calculating the smaller force:

Given that,

Let A and B be two vectors.

A=40N

We know that θ=1200

Thus, RF2=A2+B2+2ABcosθ

we know that θ=120substituting in the above formula,

Value for cos cos120=12

RF2=A2+B2-AB

Given that the resultant makes a right angle with the smaller force

So B=-Acosθ (1)

Substituting the known values that are,

A=40N

θ=120

Substituting in equation 1 we get,

B=40×-12

B=20N

Thus the smaller force is 20N.
