Question

The speed of the rain falling vertically is253m/sec. The speed at which the wind is blowing from the west to the east is 25m/s. Find the velocity of the rain experienced by the person standing on the ground.

Solution

Step 1: Given data

Speed of rain is 253m/sec

Speed of wind is 25m/s

Step 2: Formula used

If you have two vectors A and B as shown, the size of the resulting C will be:

C=A2+B2+2ABcosθ

Here θ is the angle between vectors A and B.

Step 3: Determine the velocity of rain

Vr=253m/s

Vw=25m/s

The angle between these vectors is equal to 90°. The resultant two vectors are given as,

V=Vr2+Vw2+2VrVwcos90°

=Vr2+Vw2+0

=(253)2+(25)2

=253+1=254

=25×2=50m/s

Therefore, the velocity of the rain is 50m/s.
