Can a forest regenerate naturally in a short period of time?

A forest can regenerate naturally, to some extent with herb and grass vegetation in a short period of time. Reforestation can take place naturally by leaving the deforested area undisturbed for a long period of time and forests can regenerate naturally without the interference of human beings.
