Solution

Electric fuse: An electrical fuse is a safety device used to limit an electrical circuit's current. It protects against the overflow of current in an electrical circuit. An essential component of an electrical fuse is a metal wire or strip that melts when excess current flows through it.

  1. A fuse protects the circuit and the devices connected to it from damage.
  2. Typically, in household electrical circuits, the fuse for all devices throughout the house is connected at the same time.
  3. Heavy appliances such as heaters, water heaters, etc., cannot be controlled electrically with a standard fuse.
  4. This is because the resistance of these devices is very high, allowing them to use the heating effect of the electric current.
  5. A fuse link only lets through current up to a defined limit, referred to as the fuse current rating. All devices on the market are marked with the required power and the range of potential difference or supply voltage needed to operate.

Hence, we cannot use the same fuse for a geyser and a TV because a geyser and a TV require different amounts of electricity. Therefore, the fuses used in these have different ratings.
