Can you give me a name? Solve each of the following riddles by writing the name of the organism and its mode of nutrition. One riddle is solved to help you. (a) I am tall but I cannot move. I am green and can prepare my own food. tree, autotroph (b) I live in water; people keep me in an aquarium and feed me. , (c) I am small and I can fly. I disturb your sleep, bite you and suck your blood which is my food. , (d) I am white and soft. I grow well in the rainy season. Children pluck me from the ground and admire me. I absorb nutrients from decomposed dead parts of plants and animals in the soil.

(a) Trees, autotrophs:

  1. Trees are tall but they cannot move.
  2. They have green leaves which contain chlorophyll.
  3. Hence they prepare their own food, through photosynthesis. So they are called as autotrophs.
  4. So the answer is the tree, autotroph.

(b) Fish, heterotroph:

  1. Fish is an organism that lives in water.
  2. People keep them in aquarium as pets and feed them.
  3. Animals that depend on other organisms for their food is known as heterotroph.
  4. So fish is a heterotroph.

(c) Mosquito, parasite:

  1. Mosquito is a small organism that can fly and suck our blood which is its food. It is a parasite.
  2. A parasite is an organism that lives on a host organism.
  3. They reproduce faster than the host organism and cause more damage to it.

(d) Mushroom, saprophyte:

  1. Mushroom is a soft and white organism that grows in the rainy season.
  2. It absorbs nutrients from dead and decomposed organisms. So they are saprophytes.
  3. The organism that feeds on dead, decaying matters is known as saprophytes.

The answer to the riddles are: trees - autotrophs, fish - heterotroph, mosquito - parasite, mushroom - saprophyte
