Centered unit cells can be classified into how many types?
Centered unit cell: If the constituent particles of a crystal lattice are present at a position other than the corners in addition to those at the corners, it is known as a centered unit cell.
Basically centered unit cells are of four types-
(a) Body-centered unit cell
(b) Face centered unit cell
(c) End-centered unit cell
(d) Edge-centered unit cell
Body-centered unit cell: A body-centered cubic unit cell consist of the constituent particle at the corners and in a centre of a cube.
Face-centered unit cell: A face-centered cubic unit cell consists of the constituent particle at the corners and on the center of the six faces of the cube.
End-centered unit cell: An end-centered cubic unit cell consists of the constituent particle at the corner and on any two opposite end faces of the cube.
Edge-centered unit cell: An edge-centered cubic unit cell consist of the constituent particle at the corner and on the center of the 12 edges of the cube.
