b) It regulates growth and development of the body

Human insulin was first synthesised in the year 1975, by Dr Teusche, in Switzerland. Insulin is a peptide hormone secreted by the β cells of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans and maintains normal blood glucose levels by facilitating cellular glucose uptake, regulating carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism and promoting cell division and growth through its mitogenic effects. The only advantage of human insulin is that it can be produced at a very low cost.

Following are the examples of human insulin:

  • NPH (intermediate-acting): Insuman basal, Humulin I, Insulatard
  • Regular (short-acting): Actrapid, Humulin S, Insuman Rapid
  • Premixed human insulins: Humulin M2, M3, and M5, Insuman Comb 15, and 50
