Question

Continuously water-logged soils are disadvantageous for plant growth. Why?

Open in App
Solution

Water-logged soil makes lesser oxygen available fo plants for respiration and affects their growth.
  • The main function of roots include water absorption and uptake of oxygen from the pore space of the soil.

  • In normal soil, oxygen from the pore spaces moves into the roots.

  • However, in waterlogged soil, water occupies the spaces between soil particles and pushes the oxygen out into the atmosphere.

So, continuously water-logged soils are disadvantageous for plant growth.
