D2O is known as heavy water. Heavy water is a compound which is made up of oxygen and deuterium, a heavier isotope of hydrogen which is represented by 2H or D. Heavy water is also known as deuterium oxide.
Comparison between heavy water and water
- The molar mass of heavy water is grater than normal water, because atomic mass of deuterium is more than that of protium.
- Due to the above reason, physical and chemical properties of heavy water slightly different from the normal water.
