Girth:

  1. The thickness or width of the stem is called the girth of the stem.
  2. Different types of meristems are:
    1. The girth of the stem is increased due to the Lateral meristem.
    2. Apical meristems are also found on the apices or growing parts of a plant like tips of shoots, roots, etc.
    3. Intercalary meristems are present at the internodes, the base of the grass, and also between leaves.
  3. Girth is found beneath bark (called cork cambium) and also in vascular bundles of dicot roots and stems (called vascular cambium) as thin layers.
  4. This normally increases in diameter and the girth of the plant is called secondary growth.
  5. The apical meristem is seem to be situated at the growing tip of stems, roots, and also at the apices of the leaf.
