Question

Define hydrated radius?

Open in App
Solution

Hydrated radius :

  • It is defined as the radius of ion and closely bound water molecules.
  • It is inversely related to the atomic radius of an element.
  • The ions with larger size and low charge hold water molecules less tightly and therefore have a smaller atomic radius.
  • Ions of smaller size and higher charge hold water molecules less tightly and have a smaller hydrated radius than small ions with a higher charge.
  • The ionic radius increases from top to bottom, whereas the hydrated radius decreases.
