Question

Define melting and vaporisation?

Open in App
Solution

Melting:

  • The process by which a substance changes from a solid-state to a liquid state is called melting.
  • In the case of pure crystalline solid, melting occurs at a fixed temperature.
  • Example: An ice cube melting into water.

Vaporization :

  • The process through which a substance changes from a liquid state to a vapor state is called vaporization.
  • For example, salt is recovered from seawater by the process of vaporization.

In both processes, melting, and vaporization, the increase in temperature leads to an increase in the kinetic energy of the molecules.

The force of attraction between the molecules reduces due to the state change.
