Question

Define racemization and resolution?

Open in App
Solution

Racemization:

  • It is a process by which an optically active substance either Dextro or levorotatory is directly converted into a racemic form which optically inactive.
  • This process can be done by the action of heat, chemical reagents, etc.
  • Racemization is a thermodynamically favorable method and it proceeds spontaneously if a suitable pathway is accessible for the interconversion of the enantiomers.

Resolution:

  • It is also called optical resolution or chiral resolution.
  • The separation of a racemic mixture into its constituent enantiomers is a process called resolution.
  • Since enantiomers have equivalent physical properties, such as solubility and melting point, the resolution is extremely difficult.
