Trophic Level:

  1. The various steps in a food chain at which the transfer of food (or energy) takes place are called trophic levels.
  2. The number of steps an organism is from the start of the chain is a measure of its trophic level.
  3. Food chains start at trophic level 1 with primary producers such as plants, move to herbivores at level 2, predators at level 3, and typically finish with carnivores or apex predators at level 4 or 5.
  4. The tropic level is any class of organisms that occupy the same position in a food chain, as primary consumers, secondary consumers, and tertiary consumers. Trophic level, step in a nutritive series, or food chain, of an ecosystem. The organisms of a chain are classified into these levels on the basis of their feeding behavior.
