Describe the shortcomings of cell theory

The cell theory was proposed byMatthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann. This theory states thatall living things are composed of one or more cells and the cell is the basic fundamental unit of life. The shortcomings or drawbacks of cell theory are:

  • Viruses are considered as acellular entities or organismsthat do not have cell machinery, yet they are taken into account as organisms in this cell theory
  • Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann did not know the mechanism of the cel
  • In few organisms, the structure of the body is not quite differentiated into the cells though it comprises of numerous nuclei present in them (coenocytes, such as Rhizopus)
  • RBCs and sieve tube cells continue to live and function without a proper nucleus
  • The cell theory does not hold true in the case of Prokaryotic cellsas there is nowell-defined nucleus
