Hippos milk is a bright pink colour. This is because there are two different kinds of acids that are secreted by them. These acids are ‘Hipposudoric acid’ and ‘Norhipposudoric acid’. The former is red in colour and is known as blood sweat but it is neither blood nor sweat. The latter is orange in colour. Both the acids act as a sunscreen for hippos thus protecting them from harmful UV rays. The lactating hippo will have white milf combined with these two acids, thus the milk secreted is pink in colour.
