Question

Does air conduct electricity?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Air is a combined mixture of neutral or inert gases.
  2. Therefore, it contains fewer or no charged particles or free ions which can conduct electricity.
  3. Hence, the air has poor electrical conductivity.
  4. If the electric field is high enough, the air will be partially ionized, at which point there will be free electrons that can carry electricity, making the air essentially conductive.
  5. Hence, we can say that the air is a bad conductor of electricity.
