Natural gas:

  1. It is a naturally occurring gaseous mixture of hydrocarbons comprising mainly methane.
  2. Apart from this, it also comprises several smaller concentrations of other higher alkanes.
  3. It is mainly obtained from the petroleum deposits deep underneath the Earth.
  4. It is generally present just above the crude oil layer, as gases are lighter in comparison to oil.

Petroleum:

  1. It is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, which takes place on Earth in gaseous, liquid, and solid forms.
  2. It is a liquid, which is found naturally in rock formations.
