Question

Explain the average oxidation state of Fe3O4.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Calculation of Oxidation state of Fe3O4

  1. Fe3O4 is made up of a stoichiometric blend of ferrous (FeO) and ferric (Fe2O3) oxides combined as FeO.Fe2O3
  2. Oxygen in FeO and Fe2O3 is in the -2 oxidation state.
  3. Let x and y, respectively, be the oxidation states of iron in FeO andFe2O3. As we know the sum of all the atoms or ions in a neutral substance is zero.
  4. Therefore, the oxidation number of iron in FeO is x+(-2)=0,x=+2
  5. And the oxidation number of iron in Fe2O3 is 2y+(-2)Ɨ3=0,y=+3

Therefore, the average oxidation state of Fe in Fe3O4 is+2 and+3.
