Question

Explain the difference between the thermoplastic and thermosetting plastics

Open in App
Solution

The differences between thermoplastic and thermosetting plastics are:-

THERMOPLASTIC

THERMOSETTING PLASTICS

  • The plastic can easily be deformed (change in shape) and bent on heating are called thermoplastics.
  • When the plastic cannot be easily deformed (change in shape) or molded on heating is called thermosetting plastics.
  • Thermoplastics between molecular chains have secondary bonds.
  • Thermosetting plastics between molecular chains have primary bonds and by strong cross-links are held together.
  • Thermoplastics have low tensile strength and low melting points.
  • Thermosetting plastics have high tensile strength and high melting points.
  • Toys and containers are made using thermoplastic.
  • Utensils handles and switches in the switchboard are made using thermosetting plastic.
  • PVC(Polyvinyl chloride) and Nylon are the best examples of thermoplastics.
  • Bakelite and duroplast is the best example of the thermosetting plastic.
