Question

Explain The Meaning Of Malleable And Ductile.

Open in App
Solution

Metals

  1. Metals are a class of substances having high electrical, and thermal conductivity, malleability, and ductility.
  2. They are good conductors of electricity, and they have high density.
  3. The most abundant metals in the earth's crust are aluminum, iron, potassium, calcium, sodium and magnesium.

The above statement can be used to explain the terms.

Malleable:

  1. Metals are malleable means that metals can be pressed or hammered to form a new shape, without being cracked or returned to the original shape.
  2. The term malleability comes from the word hammer means forged, these processes involve shaping under compressive force.
  3. On increasing temperature malleability increases. Therefore, processes such as forging or rolling require high temperatures.

Ductile:

  1. A ductile material can be drawn into thin sheets or wire without breaking.
  2. On decreasing the temperature ductility increases because on increasing the temperature metals become weak.
  3. All ductile materials are also malleable, however, the reverse is not always true.

Copper is an example of both malleability and ductility.
