Explain the reason we get hiccups?

Hiccups:

  1. Due to the quick intake of food, the diaphragm gets disturbed to create involuntary contractions which leads to disruption of the stomach.
  2. This causes the closure of the windpipe for a brief period due to the contraction and pulling of the diaphragm.
  3. Due to this air is unable to enter the lungs, hence creating the defining hiccup sound.
  4. The quintessential hiccup sound is made by the closing of the epiglottis as shown in the diagram below.
