Explain the structure of white phosphorus

The structure of white phosphorus is as follows:

  • It exist in P4 units
  • 4 P atoms at the corners of the regular tetrahedron
  • <PPP=60°
  • Each P atom linked with other 3 P atoms by covalent bonds
  • There are a total of six bonds and four lone pairs molecule in white phosphorus
  • phosphorus atomic size is more so it can form single bond with other phosphorus atoms. Hence it exists as tetra atomic molecules.
