Explain the term background radiation

Radiations which originate from a radioactive compound in the earth crust and from particles and rays entering the earth atmosphere are known as background radiations. Natural background radiation is ionizing radiation, that originates from a variety of natural sources. Cosmic radiation refers to sources of radiation in the form of cosmic rays that come from the sun or from outer space.
