Question

Explain what happens when amber is rubbed with wool or silk.

Solution

Explanation using Static Electricity:

  1. When amber is rubbed with wool or silk, amber becomes positively charged.
  2. When amber is rubbed with wool or silk, electrons are transferred from the amber to the wool or silk rod.
  3. This occurs because due to the rubbing friction is produced which creates enough energy for the electrons to escape from amber and enter the wool or silk.
  4. This phenomenon is known as charging by friction.
  5. This makes the electric charge of the amber slightly positive and the wool or silk on which the amount of electrons increases acquires a negative charge.
