Question

Explain why soft drink bottles are sealed under high pressure.

Solution

Henry's law

  • According to Henry's law, at a constant temperature, the amount of a gas that dissolves in a liquid is directly proportional to the pressure of that gas in that liquid.
  • That means, mp that is m=kp where m stands for the mass of the gas which is dissolved, k is the proportionality constant and p would be the pressure.
  • So basically, the soft drink bottles are carbonated drinks having Carbon dioxide gas dissolved in it.
  • And this gas must be sealed under very high pressure as the solubility of the gas increases with the increase of pressure.

Hence, the soft drink bottles are sealed under the high pressure.
