Question

Express unified atomic massa.m.u unit in kg.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Number of Carbon atoms in one mole Carbon

The molecular mass of the carbon is 12g

Avogadro's number ' 6.02×1023 ' is the number of atoms in one mole of any substance.

The number of atoms present in 12g of Carbon C612 is 6.02×1023.

Step 2: Mass of one Carbon atom

To find the mass of one carbon atom(m), divide the Molecular mass of carbon by the total number of atoms present.

m=126.02×1023=1.99×10-23g

Step 3: Unified atomic massa.m.u

The 112thmass of a Carbon(C12) atom is equal to one unified atomic mass unita.m.u.

1a.m.u=112×1.99×10-23=1.66×10-24g

To convert 'gramg' into 'kilogramkg' multiply it with10-3.

That is,

1.66×10-24×10-3=1.66×10-27kg

Therefore, the Unified atomic massa.m.u unit in kg is 1.66×10-27kg.
