Question

Find the mass of CO2 produced when 14Kg of ethene (C2H4) burnt in oxygen

Open in App
Solution

Step 1 C2H4 produced by 2 moles of CO2

The reaction of the burning of C2H4 in presence of oxygen,

C2H4Ethene+3O2Oxygen2CO2Carbondioxide+2H2OWater

The molar mass of C2H4 is 2×12+4×1=28g

The molar mass of CO2 is 12+16×2=44g

28g of C2H4 gives 88g of CO2.

Step 2 The amount of CO2produced

Here, 14Kg of C2H4 is given

That is, 14×1000=14000gC2H4

The amount of CO2 produced when 14000gC2H4 burnt in O2 is,

8828×14000=44000g

44000g CO2 is 44Kg CO2

Therefore, the amount of CO2 produced when 14KgC2H4 burnt in O2 is is 44Kg.
