Solution

Double displacement reaction:

  • A double displacement reaction is a type of chemical reaction in which two reactants exchange ions to form two new compounds.
  • Mostly these reactions result in the formation of a precipitate as the product.
  • Examples including the reactions are :

HCl(aq)(Hydrocholricacid)+NaOH(aq)(Sodiumhydroxide)NaCl(aq)(Sodiumchloride)+H2O(l)(water)

AgNO3(aq)(Silvernitrate)+HCl(aq)(Hydrochloricacid)AgCl(s)(Silverchloride)(whiteprecipitate)+HNO3(aq)(Nitricacid)

Reaction of NaCl ( Sodium chloride) and AgNO3 ( Silver nitrate):

  • NaCl ( Sodium chloride) and AgNO3 ( Silver nitrate) to give AgCl ( Silver chloride) and NaNO3 (Sodium nitrate) .
  • This is an example of a double displacement reaction.
  • Here both silver nitrate and sodium chloride are colorless solutions, they form a white precipitate (AgCl)and a colorless solution.
  • Here silver displaces sodium from the solution forming the white precipitate.

Hence, the reaction of NaCl ( Sodium chloride) and AgNO3 ( Silver nitrate) givesAgCl ( Silver chloride) and NaNO3 (Sodium nitrate) is an example of a double displacement reaction.
