Question

Give an example of a compound with strong covalent bonds

Open in App
Solution

Covalent bond:-

  1. The equal sharing of electrons from both the atoms which are participating, forms a covalent bond.
  2. In this covalent bond, the electron pairs that are taking part in the bond formation is called shared pair or bonding pair.
  3. By sharing electron pairs, the atoms can achieve stability in their outer shell just like the noble gases.
  4. More the no. of covalent bonds between two atoms in a molecule, the more will be its strength.
  5. Example of a strong covalent bond is NNwith a bond strength of 946kJmol-1.

Therefore, an example of a strong covalent bond is Dinitrogen gas(NN).
