Question

Give an example of a weak acid?

Open in App
Solution

Weak acid:

  • The acids which don't completely dissociate or partially dissociate into ions in the aqueous solution are called weak acids.
  • Depending on its strength to dissociate, the acids dissociating more are strong whereas the ones that dissociate very less are called weak acids.
  • The majority of the acids are weak acids. Also, most organic acids are weak.
  • In the aqueous solution, the weak acid is always in equilibrium with its constituent ions.
  • Examples of weak acids are formic acid(HCOOH), acetic acid(CH3COOH), phosphoric acid(H3PO4), etc.

Hence, the example of a weak acid is acetic acid(CH3COOH).
