Question

Give examples of Basic salt, Complex Salt and Normal Salt.

Open in App
Solution

Normal salt:-

  1. Salts are the ionic compounds that are formed by the neutralisation reaction.
  2. These are the products of an acid and a base.
  3. For example, when Sodium hydroxide reacts with Hydrochloric acid it forms a normal salt of Sodium chloride.

NaOH(aq)Sodiumhydroxide+HCl(aq)HydrochloricacidNaCl(aq)Sodiumchloride+H2O(l)Water

Complex salt:-

  1. Complex salt is salt where various complex ions are attached to the central metal ion.
  2. Example of such type of complex salt is: Potassium ferrocyanide K4[Fe(CN)6], Potassium argentocyanide K[Ag(CN)2]

Basic salt:-

  1. These are the salts that are formed by the neutralisation reaction of a weak acid and a strong base.
  2. For example, when a weak acid like Acetic acid reacts with a strong base like Sodium hydroxide, it forms a basic salt of Sodium acetate:

NaOH(aq)Sodiumhydroxide+CH3COOH(aq)AceticacidCH3COONa(aq)Sodiumacetate+H2O(l)Water

Therefore, examples of normal salt- Sodium chlorideNaCl, basic salt- Sodium acetateCH3COONa, and complex salt- Potassium ferrocyanideK4[Fe(CN)6]
