Question

Give in brief O2is paramagnetic and N2 is diamagnetic.

Open in App
Solution

N2 is diamagnetic:-

  • The total number of electrons present in the Nitrogen (N2) molecule is 14, 7 from each Nitrogen-atom.
  • The electronic configuration of the Nitrogen (N2) molecule will be:

σ1s2σ1s2σ2s2σ2s2π2px2π2py2σ2pz2

  • As we can see that all the electrons are paired therefore Nitrogen (N2 is diamagnetic in nature).

O2is paramagnetic:-

  • The total number of electrons present in the Oxygen (O2) molecule is 16, 8 from each Oxygen atom.
  • The electronic configuration of the Oxygen (O2) molecule will be:

σ1s2σ1s2σ2s2σ2s2σ2pz2π2px2π2py2π2px1π2py1

  • The presence of two unpaired electrons in the π*(2px) and π*(2py) molecular orbitals results in the paramagnetic nature of the Oxygen molecule.

Therefore, O2 is paramagnetic and N2 is diamagnetic in nature.
