Steppes are the grasslands of Asia. Steppes grassland has warm to hot summers and cold winters. The Great Steppe grassland is the vast steppe region of Eurasia ( Europe and Asia) in the temperate grasslands, savannas, and shrublands.

What are grasslands?

A grassland ecosystem is an area of land containing mostly grasses. There is no presence of trees in this area usually.

Where are they found?

The world’s largest steppe region, commonly referred to as ‘the Great Steppe’, is found in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and nearby countries expanding from Ukraine in the west through Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan to the Altai, Kopp et Dag and the Tian Shan ranges in China.

Features of Steppe Grassland

  • Steppes are a class of regions characterized by vast, wide-open grasslands.
  • In this area, trees are generally absent, except near lakes or rivers.
  • The climate of the steppes differs from region to region.
  • Steppe biomes comprise the montane grasslands and shrublands biome and the temperate grasslands, savannas, and shrublands biome.

Classification of Steppes by climate

Steppe based on climate is classified into the following categories

  • Temperate steppe: The actual steppe, found in continental areas of the world. These can be further divided as in the Rocky Mountains Steppes
  • Subtropical steppe: A similar association of plants which can be found in the driest areas with a Mediterranean-like climate and it usually has a short wet period
