Solution

The horizontal axis and vertical axis of turbine are the types of wind turbines.

The two main categories of wind turbines are horizontal and vertical axis. The horizontal-axis turbine typically has a three-blade vertical propeller that catches the wind face-on. The vertical turbine has a set of blades that spins around a vertical axis.

Turbine and its types

Basically, the turbines are used to convert wind energy into electrical energy with a generator’s help.

  • It is a turbine in which the rotation of the rotor is parallel to the ground and parallel to wind direction.
  • The horizontal axis means the rotating axis of the wind turbine is horizontal or parallel with the ground.
  • With vertical axis wind turbines, the turbine’s rotational axis stands vertical or perpendicular to the ground.
  • Vertical axis turbine in which the rotation of the rotor is perpendicular to the ground and perpendicular to the wind direction.

Advantages of horizontal axis turbine and vertical axis turbine

Horizontal axis

  • It has a self-starting ability. It does not require any external power source to start.
  • It has high efficiency as compared with the HAWT.
  • Capable of working in high wind speed condition.

Vertical axis

  • It is simple in design and easy to construct and transport.
  • It can be easily installed at the desired location.
  • It requires less ground area for its installation.
