Question

How an AC Generator can be converted Into a DC generator?

Open in App
Solution

DC generator:

  1. A generator is produce dc current from the mechanical energy of rotation energy.
  2. Its main principle is the theory of electromagnetic induction. When a conductor rotates on a magnetic field, the current will induce in the conductor.

AC generator:

  1. An alternating current generator (AC generator) is a mechanism that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.
  2. Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction governs the operation of alternating current generators.

Explanation:

AC generator can be converted into a DC generator by attaching a split ring commutator.

  1. A slip ring commutator simply maintains a connection between the moving rotor and the stationary stator, whereas a split ring commutator causes the current to shift direction every alternate half rotation.
  2. It essentially turns the current direction in every half-cycle to positive by changing the direction of the current every other half rotation.
  3. As a result, it converts an AC generator to a DC generator.
  4. The slip rings in the AC generator can be removed and replaced with split rings.
  5. The new AC generator employs concave magnets, which are then changed, before removing the coil and replacing it with an armature.
  6. The AC generator will begin to operate as a DC generator.

Hence, we can convert the AC generator to a DC generator by attaching a split ring commutator.
