In an industrial setting, microbes can be grown using a fermenter. Organisms such as bacteria, fungi and certain eukaryotic cells are used to make useful products through their fermentation. These fermented products have applications in various industries ranging from food to medicine.
The process of fermentation occurs when the cells/ organisms are submerged in a liquid medium. To avoid contamination, the container where fermentation takes place is throughly sterilized before the beginning of the process. The process of fermentation also contains a medium which is designed to support the growth of the organisms or cell. This medium has a carbon and nitrogen source, water, essential salts and micronutrients.
