Solution

Classification of microorganisms based on temperature:

  1. Certain microorganisms can survive in a wide range of temperatures while others die.
  2. The organisms that can survive have a different genetic constitution, which makes them possible to survive in such high or low temperatures.
  3. Based on their temperature there are divided into:
    1. Mesophiles: Mesophiles are the ones that survive at normal temperatures,e.g. Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli.
    2. Thermophiles: They can tolerate high range of temperatures,e.g. Thermus aquaticus.
    3. Psychrophiles: They are cold-loving microbes,e.g. Arthrobacter species.
    4. Hyperthermophiles: They can survive a range of temperatures of 80°-113°C,e.g. Pyrolobus fumarii.
