Question

How are the wavelength and frequency of a sound wave related to its speed?

Open in App
Solution

Expression for Speed of sound wave:

  1. Wavelength of the sound wave is the distance between the consecutive compression or rarefaction.
  2. In sound waves, the distance between two adjacent compressions or rarefactions is called a wavelength.
  3. One wavelength in a transverse wave is defined as the distance between two adjacent crests or troughs.
  4. Frequency of the sound wave is defined as the number of vibrations occurring or, the number of compressions and rarefaction passing through a certain point in one second.
  5. Hence if λ is its wavelength and ν is its frequency, then the speed of the sound wave s can be given as

Speed (s)=Wavelength (λ)×Frequency (ν)

s=λν
