Part 1: Preparation of XeF2

  • XeF2can be prepared by heating a mixture of Xenon and Fluorine in the ratio of 2:1 at 400 °C and 1 bar of pressure in a sealed nickel tube.
  • The balanced chemical reaction can be represented as:

Xe(g)(Xenon)+F2(g)(Fluorine)400°C(Ni)XeF2(s)(Xenonfluoride)

  • Also it can be prepared by reacting Dioxygen difluoride with xenon at 118°C.

Xe(g)(Xenon)+O2F2(g)(Dioxygendifluoride)118°cXeF2(s)(Xenonfluoride)+O2(g)(Oxygen)

Part 2: Preparation of XeF4

  • Xenon fluoride can be prepared when a mixture of xenon and fluorine (1:5) is passed at 400°C and 5-6 atm.
    Xe(g)(Xenon)+2F2(g)(Flourine)400°C,5-6atmXeF4(s)(Xenonfluoride)

Hence, the above is the appropriate process by which XeF2and XeF4 can be prepared.
