How can acceleration be negative?

Negative acceleration is just acceleration directed towards the direction that we defined as the “negative” direction. So negative acceleration means acceleration is in a negative direction as per the reference frame. This negative acceleration can increase or decrease the speed of an object depending on the direction of object motion. A car moving in a particular direction that has the brakes applied will experience a “negative acceleration” in the direction the car is travelling.
