Question

How does the formation of peptide bond take place?

Open in App
Solution

Peptide Bond formation:

  1. The α-nitrogen atom of one amino acid and the carbonyl carbon of another form a peptide link, also known as an amide bond.
  2. The amino and carboxyl groups of consecutive amino acids form a peptide bond.
  3. At the molecular level, a peptide bond is created through a dehydration synthesis or reaction.
  4. The dehydration synthesis brings two amino acids together to form a peptide link.
  5. One of the amino acids gives the reaction a carboxyl group while losing a hydroxyl group during the process.
