Question

How does the water keep in an earthen pot become cool during summer?

Open in App
Solution

Evaporation:

  1. The conversion of liquid into a gaseous state is called evaporation.
  2. An earthen pot is porous.
  3. Vaporization takes place in the environment.
  4. Similarly, vaporization helps water kept in an earthen pot become cool during summer.
  5. Minuscule pores are present in the pot as it is made of mud particles.
  6. Water placed in earthen pots is evaporated from these minuscule pores.
  7. There are many small pores in an earthen pot.
  8. Through these pores, the water kept inside the pot evaporates.
  9. It takes the latent heat required for vaporization from the earthen pot and the remaining water in the earthen pot.
  10. Hence water loses heat making the water inside the pot cool.
  11. Some of the heat energy is used in the process of evaporation.
  12. Therefore the water stored in earthen pots often tends to become cooler in summer.
