Question

How does the water kept in an earthen pot (matka) become cool during summer?

Solution

Evaporation:

  1. The change of a liquid or solid into a gas is known as evaporation.
  2. Evaporation keeps water held in an earthen pot cool even in the summer.
  3. The walls of an earthen pot have a high number of microscopic pores, and some water molecules regularly seep through these pores to the outside.
  4. This water evaporates indefinitely, absorbing the latent heat needed for vaporisation from the remaining water.
  5. As a result, the remaining water loses heat and cools.
