Question

How is a voltmeter connected in the circuit to measure the potential difference between two points?

Open in App
Solution

Voltmeter

A voltmeter is a device or instrument which measures the electric potential difference between two points in a circuit.

Connection of voltmeter

  1. A voltmeter is connected in parallel combination with a device(circuit).
  2. We know, voltmeter is a device which gives same potential drop across parallel combinations.
  3. So a voltmeter is always connected parallel across the ends of the conductor to measure the potential difference between two points.
  4. To fudge the high amount of resistance in the circuit and to find a good accurate measurement of the potential difference it is unnecessary to connect a voltmeter in parallel combination with the circuit.
  5. The voltmeter is connected across the ends of the resistance as shown in the figure.
  6. In the figure since the voltmeter and resistor are connected in parallel, there is same potential difference in both of them. So by measuring the potential difference across the voltmeter, we can get the potential difference across the resistance.
