Question

How is the equal genetic contribution of male and female parents ensured in the progeny?

Open in App
Solution

Inheritance of chromosomes in offspring:

  1. In humans, the progeny receives an equal genetic contribution from both male and female parents.
  2. This is accomplished by inheriting an equal number of chromosomes from both parents.
  3. In the nucleus of humans, there are 23 pairs of chromosomes.
  4. Every human individual has 23 pairs of autosomes and 1 pair of sex chromosomes.
  5. Humans have two sex chromosomes, X and Y.
  6. XX chromosomes in females, whereas XY chromosomes in males.
  7. As the fertilization process occurs during reproduction, the male gamete combines with the female gametes, resulting in the development of the diploid zygote.
  8. Out of 23 pairs of chromosomes in progeny, the male parent contributes 22 autosomes and one X or Y chromosome, and the female parent contributes 22 autosomes and one X chromosome
  9. After receiving an equal quantity of genetic material from each parent, the zygote preserves its diploid character.
