Question

How many constitutional isomers does C3H8O have?

Open in App
Solution

Constitutional Isomers

  1. Constitutional isomers are isomers that share the same structural formula but have different bonding atomic organization and bonding patterns.
  2. Constitutional Isomers are of three types: (a) Chain Isomers: Chain isomers are the constitutional isomers in which components of the skeleton are ordered in different ways to create different skeletal structures. Example: Pentane (CH3CH2CH2CH2CH3) and Neopentane (CH3CH(CH3)CH2CH3).
  3. Positional Isomers: Positional isomers differ from each other based on the position at which the functional group is attached to the molecule. Example: Pent-1-ol (CH3CH2CH2CH2CH2OH) and Pent-2-ol (CH3CH2CH2CH(OH)CH3)
  4. Functional Isomers: They are the isomers that share the same molecular formula but vary in the manner in which the atoms are connected to each other. Example: Ethane (CH3CH2OH) and Dimethyl ether (CH3OCH3).

Constitutional Isomers of C3H8O

  1. C3H8O have three constitutional isomers. 1- Propanol (CH3CH2CH2OH) 1-Propanol Lewis Structure Structural Formula Butanol, PNG, 1448x747px, Lewis Structure, Alcohol, Area, Black, Black And
  2. 2- Propanol CH3CH(OH)CH3

3. Ethyl-methyl Ether (CH3CH2OCH3)

Therefore, C3H8O exhibits three constitutional isomers.
