Question

How many structural isomers are possible with molecular formula C6H14?

Open in App
Solution

Structural isomers:

  1. Isomerism in which isomers have various configurations of atoms within the molecule is known as structural isomerism.
  2. The chemical formula remains the same only the physical positions are changed.
  3. C6H14Hexane is the sixth member of the homologous series of alkanes.
  4. There are five structural isomers present for hexane
  5. The molecules with only primary and secondary carbon atoms come first. This kind will only have one isomer with the name n-hexane or hexane.
  6. The isomers with a single tertiary carbon atom. This kind will have two isomers. Isopentane or 2-methyl pentane is one, and 3-methyl pentane is the other.
  7. Isomer with two tertiary carbon atoms only one such structure, known as 2,3-dimethyl butane, will be possible.
  8. The isomer with quaternary carbon. Only one sort of molecule will be possible, and it will be known as neo-hexane or 2,2-dimethyl butane.

Therefore, five structural isomers are possible for hexane.
