Question

How plasma membrane brings the exchange of materials between cells and the surrounding medium as well as between membrane-bound cell organelles and cytoplasm?

Solution

Plasma membrane:

The plasma membrane, also called the cell membrane, is the membrane found in all cells that separates the interior of the cell from the outside environment.

Method of transport by the plasma membrane:

  1. This membrane allows only certain molecules to enter the cell.
  2. Hence, it is called a selectively permeable membrane.
  3. Due to the presence of the cell membrane, the material enters by osmosis.
  4. The material moves from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
  5. The absence of the cell membrane would cause the cell to die as the protoplasmic contents would disappear.
